The A1989 MacBook Pro 13-inch represents the second generation of Apple's Touch Bar redesign, covering the 2018 and 2019 model years, with the closely related A2159 and A2251 rounding out the 2019 and 2020 revisions under the same chassis design. Apple made a critical engineering change in this generation that directly affects screen reliability: the display flex cable was lengthened compared to the A1706. This seemingly minor revision was Apple's quiet acknowledgement of the Flexgate defect that plagued the first-generation Touch Bar models. As a result, the A1989 is significantly less prone to the stage lighting and backlight failure symptoms that made the A1706 notorious. However, it is not entirely immune. Under heavy daily use over six or more years, even the longer cable can show signs of fatigue, particularly in units that are frequently opened and closed throughout the working day.

The A1989 was the first 13-inch MacBook Pro to ship with True Tone across all configurations, and this feature adds an important dimension to screen repair that did not exist on the earlier A1706 and A1708 models. True Tone calibration data is stored on the display assembly itself and must be properly transferred or re-paired to the logic board during a screen replacement. If this pairing step is skipped, the replacement screen will function normally but True Tone will be permanently disabled in System Preferences. This is not a barrier for experienced repair technicians, but it does mean that the quick-and-dirty diagnostic shortcuts used on older pre-T2 Macs will not work on the A1989. The A1989 also shipped with four Thunderbolt 3 ports across all configurations, unlike the A1708 which only had two, and the higher port density means greater logic board complexity near the display connector area.
