Types of SSDs Explained
Not all SSDs are created equal. Understanding the different types helps you choose the right upgrade for your system, budget, and performance needs.
2.5" SATA SSD
SATA III (6 Gbps)
The 2.5-inch SATA SSD is the most widely compatible form factor. It fits into the same drive bay as a traditional hard drive, making it a straightforward drop-in replacement for any laptop or desktop manufactured in the last 15 years. SATA III provides a maximum theoretical bandwidth of 6 Gbps, which translates to real-world sequential read speeds of around 550 MB/s. While this is significantly slower than NVMe drives, it still represents a massive leap over mechanical hard drives, which typically max out at 100-150 MB/s.
NVMe M.2 (PCIe Gen 3)
PCIe Gen 3 x4
NVMe M.2 drives using PCIe Gen 3 represent a significant jump over SATA SSDs. The M.2 form factor is a small card that slots directly into the motherboard, eliminating the need for cables. PCIe Gen 3 x4 provides up to 32 Gbps of bandwidth, enabling sequential read speeds of up to 3,500 MB/s. This is roughly six times faster than the best SATA SSD. Most laptops from 2017 onwards include at least one M.2 slot with PCIe Gen 3 support.
NVMe M.2 (PCIe Gen 4)
PCIe Gen 4 x4
PCIe Gen 4 doubles the bandwidth of Gen 3, offering up to 64 Gbps across four lanes. This enables sequential read speeds of up to 7,000 MB/s and write speeds of 5,000 MB/s. Gen 4 NVMe drives are ideal for video editors working with 4K and 8K footage, game developers, and anyone who regularly moves large files. Supported by AMD Ryzen 3000-series and newer, Intel 12th Gen and newer, and most laptops manufactured from 2021 onwards.
NVMe M.2 (PCIe Gen 5)
PCIe Gen 5 x4
The newest generation of NVMe SSDs uses PCIe Gen 5, doubling Gen 4 bandwidth to an incredible 128 Gbps. Sequential reads reach up to 14,000 MB/s. Currently supported on Intel 13th/14th Gen and AMD Ryzen 7000-series platforms. Gen 5 SSDs are the ultimate choice for content creators, scientific computing, and users who demand the absolute fastest storage performance available. Note that Gen 5 drives may require a heatsink due to higher thermal output.

Which SSD Is Right for You?
Not sure which SSD to choose? Use our guide below to find the best match for how you use your computer.
Everyday Home Use
Web browsing, email, office documents, streaming video, and light photo editing. You want your computer to feel snappy and responsive without overspending.
A SATA SSD delivers a massive performance jump over a hard drive for everyday tasks. If your system supports M.2, a Gen 3 NVMe drive offers even better responsiveness at a small price premium.
Gaming
PC gaming, large game libraries, and games that benefit from fast loading via DirectStorage. You want shorter load times and smooth texture streaming.
Modern games can be 50-150GB each. A Gen 4 NVMe SSD dramatically reduces load times and is required for DirectStorage in newer titles. Choose 1TB minimum, or 2TB if you keep many games installed.
Creative & Professional Work
Video editing (4K/8K), 3D rendering, large Photoshop files, music production, software development with large codebases.
Video editors and 3D artists frequently read and write enormous files. Gen 4 NVMe provides the throughput needed for smooth timeline scrubbing with 4K footage. Gen 5 is worth considering for 8K workflows or when every second of render time matters.
Budget Upgrade for Older Laptop
Your laptop is 5-10 years old, running slowly, and you want to extend its life without buying a new machine.
Older laptops typically only have SATA connections. A 2.5-inch SATA SSD is the single most impactful upgrade you can make. Combined with a RAM upgrade, it can make a 7-year-old laptop feel nearly as responsive as a brand-new one.
Business & Office
Multiple applications open simultaneously, large spreadsheets, databases, virtual meetings, CRM software, and cloud-synced files.
Business users benefit from the fast random read/write performance of NVMe drives. Switching between applications, loading large spreadsheets, and searching databases all happen near-instantly. The improved productivity easily justifies the upgrade cost.

MacBook SSD Upgrades
Apple MacBook SSD upgrades require specialist knowledge due to proprietary connectors and firmware. MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models from 2013 to 2017 can be upgraded with compatible NVMe drives using Apple-specific adapters. We source high-quality adapters and test extensively to ensure full compatibility with macOS.
For models from 2018 onwards (including all M-series MacBooks), the SSD is soldered to the logic board and cannot be replaced. If your MacBook is running out of storage, we can advise on external NVMe enclosures and cloud storage solutions as alternatives.

SSD Upgrade FAQs
Common questions about our SSD upgrade services in Bournemouth and across the UK
How much does an SSD upgrade cost?▼
SSD upgrade pricing depends on the capacity and type of drive (SATA or NVMe). All our prices include professional installation, full data migration from your existing drive, and performance testing. We use premium brands like Samsung, Crucial, and Western Digital with up to 5-year manufacturer warranties. Contact us for a quote tailored to your specific system and storage needs.
Is an SSD upgrade worth it for an old laptop?▼
Absolutely. An SSD upgrade is the single most impactful upgrade you can make to an old laptop. If your laptop is running slowly with a mechanical hard drive, switching to an SSD will reduce boot times from 2-3 minutes down to 10-15 seconds, make applications open almost instantly, and eliminate the constant "thinking" pauses you experience during everyday use. We regularly upgrade laptops that are 7-10 years old and the difference is dramatic. Many customers tell us it feels like a brand-new computer. Combined with a RAM upgrade, which we offer as a bundle service, even a decade-old laptop can handle modern web browsing, Office work, and streaming with ease.
How long does an SSD upgrade take?▼
The time required for an SSD upgrade depends on the amount of data being migrated and the type of drive being installed. The physical installation is straightforward, but the data migration process, where we clone your existing hard drive onto the new SSD, takes longer depending on how much data you have. We recommend dropping off your device as early as possible for the quickest turnaround. If you are using our mail-in service, we aim to complete the upgrade and return your device promptly including postage time.
Will I lose my files during an SSD upgrade?▼
No. Our SSD upgrade service includes full data migration. We clone your entire existing drive to the new SSD, which means your operating system, all installed programs, personal files, photos, documents, desktop layout, and settings are transferred exactly as they are. When you get your computer back, everything looks and works identically, just dramatically faster. We also keep a backup of your data until you confirm everything is working correctly.
What is the difference between SATA and NVMe SSDs?▼
SATA SSDs use the older SATA interface with maximum speeds of around 550 MB/s read and 520 MB/s write. They come in a 2.5-inch form factor and are compatible with virtually any laptop or desktop. NVMe SSDs use the PCIe interface via an M.2 connector and offer significantly faster speeds: up to 3,500 MB/s for Gen 3 and 7,000 MB/s for Gen 4. NVMe drives are smaller, use less power, and deliver much better random I/O performance. The choice depends on your system compatibility. If your laptop or PC has an M.2 slot, we recommend NVMe. If it only has a 2.5-inch SATA bay, a SATA SSD still delivers a massive speed improvement over a hard drive.
Can you upgrade the SSD in a MacBook?▼
It depends on the MacBook model. MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models from 2013 to 2017 use proprietary Apple SSDs that can be upgraded with compatible third-party NVMe drives using an adapter. MacBook Pro models from 2016-2017 with Touch Bar use a soldered SSD that cannot be replaced. All MacBooks from 2018 onwards, including M1, M2, M3, and M4 models, have the SSD soldered directly to the logic board and cannot be upgraded. For eligible models, we offer MacBook SSD upgrades. If your MacBook cannot have its SSD replaced, we can advise on alternative solutions such as external NVMe enclosures. Visit our Apple services page for more details.
Do I need to reinstall Windows after an SSD upgrade?▼
No, you do not need to reinstall Windows. Our data migration process clones your entire existing drive to the new SSD, including your Windows installation, all drivers, installed software, and activation status. Windows will boot from the new SSD exactly as it did from your old drive. In some cases, we may recommend a fresh Windows installation if your existing installation is heavily fragmented, corrupted, or has accumulated significant bloatware over time. A clean installation on a new SSD provides the best possible performance, but this is entirely your choice and we will discuss the options with you.
How much faster will my computer be after an SSD upgrade?▼
The speed improvement depends on your current drive and the type of SSD installed. Upgrading from a mechanical hard drive to a SATA SSD, you can expect boot times to drop from 2-3 minutes to around 15 seconds, applications to open 5-10 times faster, and file transfers to increase from 80-120 MB/s to 550 MB/s. Upgrading to an NVMe SSD increases these numbers further: boot times under 10 seconds, sequential read speeds up to 7,000 MB/s with Gen 4, and dramatically improved random I/O for multitasking. In our benchmark testing, customers see an average 85-90% improvement in overall system responsiveness.
Can you upgrade an SSD and RAM at the same time?▼
Yes, and we strongly recommend it. An SSD plus RAM upgrade together is the most cost-effective way to revive a slow computer. While the SSD eliminates storage bottlenecks, additional RAM allows your system to handle more applications simultaneously without slowing down. We offer a discounted bundle price when you combine SSD and RAM upgrades in a single service. Visit our RAM upgrade page for pricing and details, or book a combined upgrade and we will assess your system to recommend the optimal combination for your needs and budget.
What size SSD do I need?▼
For most users, 512GB provides a good balance of storage space and cost. This is enough for Windows, all your applications, a reasonable photo collection, and some games. If you are a gamer with a large library, or you work with video and large media files, we recommend 1TB or 2TB. For users on a tight budget who primarily browse the web and use Office applications, 256GB is sufficient if you store larger files on an external drive or cloud storage. During our assessment, we check your current drive usage and recommend the right capacity for your needs.
