The A1707 MacBook Pro 15-inch was Apple's flagship professional laptop for the 2016-2017 generation, and its larger chassis introduced a distinct set of display challenges that differ meaningfully from the smaller A1706. With a 15.4-inch Retina panel running at 2880x1800 resolution, the A1707 display assembly is physically heavier and places greater mechanical stress on the hinge and flex cable with every open-close cycle. This increased mass means the Flexgate issue manifests differently on the A1707 compared to its 13-inch sibling. While both models share the same fundamental design flaw in cable routing, the A1707's heavier display lid accelerates wear on the flex cable, and we frequently see A1707 units progress from early symptoms to complete backlight failure more rapidly than A1706 models.

What truly distinguishes the A1707 in a repair context is its discrete AMD Radeon Pro graphics processor. The 15-inch model was the first Touch Bar MacBook to ship with a dedicated GPU alongside the integrated Intel graphics, and this dGPU can produce visual artefacts, screen corruption, and display glitches that closely mimic screen damage. We regularly see A1707 owners who have been quoted for a screen replacement elsewhere when the actual fault lies with the failing Radeon GPU on the logic board. The simplest diagnostic test is connecting the A1707 to an external monitor: if artefacts appear on both displays, the GPU is at fault rather than the screen panel. This distinction is critical because a screen replacement costs a fraction of a logic board repair, and performing the wrong one wastes the customer's money entirely.

The A1707's higher thermal load also creates a secondary concern during screen repair. The quad-core Intel i7 processor and dedicated AMD GPU generate substantially more heat than the dual-core chips in 13-inch models, and this thermal output is channelled directly past the display hinge area. Over the eight-plus years since these machines were manufactured, this constant heat cycling can degrade the adhesive bonding the display assembly and weaken solder joints on the display connector. Battery swelling is another A1707-specific concern that affects screen repair: the larger battery pack in the 15-inch chassis is more prone to expansion with age, and a swollen battery can crack the display from the inside by pushing upward against the keyboard and trackpad assembly. During every A1707 screen repair, we inspect the battery condition and advise on replacement if swelling is detected, because installing a new display over a swelling battery simply invites a second failure.
