The A2780 MacBook Pro 16-inch is the M2 Pro/Max refresh of the 16-inch professional lineup, carrying forward the same 16.2-inch Liquid Retina XDR display that debuted on the A2485 in late 2021. At 3456 x 2234 resolution with ProMotion adaptive refresh up to 120Hz, the A2780 houses Apple's largest laptop panel with over 10,000 mini-LEDs arranged across more than 2,500 local dimming zones. This massive display area makes the A2780 exceptionally popular with creative professionals working in video editing, colour grading, and 3D rendering, but it also means the screen is the single most expensive component in the machine. The sheer size of the 16.2-inch panel creates different stress dynamics compared to 14-inch models: the larger lid exerts more torque on the hinge during opening and closing, and the wider surface area is more susceptible to flex damage if pressure is applied to the centre of a closed lid, such as in a tightly packed bag.

A notable improvement in the A2780 over the A2485 is power efficiency. The M2 Pro and M2 Max chips draw less power under equivalent workloads, which means the A2780 display can sustain its 1600-nit peak HDR brightness and 1000-nit full-screen brightness for longer periods before thermal management reduces output. This is particularly relevant for professionals running extended HDR grading sessions. The A2780 also upgraded its HDMI port to HDMI 2.1, enabling external 8K display output at 60Hz -- a capability that matters during post-repair testing when we verify that the display controller, which manages both the internal XDR panel and external display output simultaneously, is functioning correctly.

For repair purposes, the A2780 display assembly shares physical compatibility with certain A2485 parts configurations, which benefits parts availability. However, the A2780's Space Black colour option requires careful colour matching of the display bezel and trim. The larger display cable on the A2780 runs through the hinge and connects to the logic board with a wider flex ribbon than the 14-inch models.
