Common Laptop Screen Problems
Our expert technicians diagnose and repair every type of laptop screen problem. From cracked displays and dead pixels to backlight bleed and hinge damage, we have seen and fixed it all.
Cracked Screen
Physical damage to the screen glass or LCD panel from drops, impacts, or pressure. Even a small crack can spread across the display over time, so early replacement is recommended to prevent further damage.
No Display / Black Screen
Screen remains completely black even though the laptop powers on. This can be caused by a failed backlight, damaged LCD panel, severed display cable, or in some cases a graphics chip failure that requires further diagnosis.
Flickering Display
Screen flickers, flashes, or displays an unstable image. This is one of the most common screen complaints we see. Flickering can be caused by a loose display cable, failing backlight, incompatible display driver, or a faulty inverter board on older laptops.
Colour Problems
Display shows distorted, washed-out, or incorrect colours. A pink or green tint across the entire screen usually indicates a failing LCD panel or a damaged display cable. Colour banding and gradients breaking up can signal LCD degradation.
Dead Pixels
Individual pixels stuck in one colour or permanently dark. A single dead pixel may be tolerable, but clusters of dead or stuck pixels can be distracting and often indicate the beginning of wider panel failure.
Backlight Bleed & Dim Display
Light leaking around the edges of the screen, or the entire display appearing too dim to use comfortably. Backlight bleed is visible as bright patches in corners on dark scenes. A uniformly dim display often points to a failing backlight or inverter.
Hinge Damage
Broken or loose laptop hinges causing the screen to wobble, not stay open, or damaging the display cable over time. Hinge damage is extremely common on laptops that are opened and closed frequently, and if left unrepaired it can crack the plastic bezel or sever the display cable entirely.
Horizontal or Vertical Lines
Coloured or white lines running across the screen horizontally or vertically. These lines can be caused by a damaged LCD panel, a failing graphics chip, or a partially disconnected display cable. Lines that change when you press on the bezel often indicate a cable issue.
Types of Laptop Screens Explained
Understanding the different screen technologies helps you make an informed decision when choosing a replacement panel. Here is what each type means and when it matters.
TN (Twisted Nematic)
The most affordable panel type, commonly found in budget laptops. TN screens offer fast response times which is why they are still used in some gaming laptops, but they have narrow viewing angles and poor colour accuracy. Colours wash out significantly when viewed from the side.
Advantages
Disadvantages
Best For
Budget laptops and basic computing tasks
IPS (In-Plane Switching)
The most popular panel type in modern laptops. IPS screens offer wide viewing angles, accurate colour reproduction, and good contrast. They are the standard choice for general-purpose laptops, business machines, and creative work. Most mid-range and premium laptops from 2018 onwards use IPS panels.
Advantages
Disadvantages
Best For
General use, business, creative work, and photo editing
OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode)
Premium display technology where each pixel produces its own light, eliminating the need for a backlight. This means true blacks, infinite contrast ratios, and stunning colour vibrancy. OLED screens are found in high-end laptops from ASUS, Dell, HP, and Lenovo. They are more expensive to replace but offer an unmatched visual experience.
Advantages
Disadvantages
Best For
Premium laptops, video editing, HDR content, and creative professionals
LED-Backlit LCD
The standard backlight technology used in the vast majority of laptop screens. LED backlighting replaced the older CCFL (fluorescent) technology and offers better energy efficiency, thinner profiles, and more even illumination. When people say "LED screen" they usually mean an LCD panel with LED backlighting.
Advantages
Disadvantages
Best For
Most laptops manufactured from 2010 onwards
Touchscreen
A digitiser layer added on top of the LCD panel that detects finger and stylus input. Touchscreen laptops require both the LCD panel and digitiser to function correctly. When a touchscreen cracks, both layers often need replacing. Touch screens add approximately 0.5mm thickness and slightly reduce maximum brightness.
Advantages
Disadvantages
Best For
2-in-1 convertibles, tablets, and creative professionals using stylus input
Anti-Glare (Matte) vs Glossy
Not a panel type but a surface finish that significantly affects usability. Anti-glare matte screens have a textured coating that diffuses reflections, making them ideal for bright environments and office work. Glossy screens offer punchier colours and deeper blacks but reflect light like a mirror. Most business laptops use matte screens; consumer laptops often use glossy.
Advantages
Disadvantages
Best For
Matte for office and outdoor use; glossy for media consumption
DIY vs Professional Screen Replacement
Thinking about replacing your laptop screen yourself? While there are plenty of YouTube tutorials, DIY screen replacement carries real risks that can turn a straightforward repair into a costly disaster.
ESD damage to internal components
Without proper anti-static equipment, a static discharge from your hands can permanently damage the motherboard, RAM, or display controller. You may not notice the damage immediately -- it can cause intermittent failures weeks later.
Wrong replacement screen purchased
Laptop screens are not universal. Even within the same model, there can be multiple panel variants with different connectors, resolutions, and pin configurations. Installing the wrong panel can result in no display, distorted colours, or damage to the display connector on the motherboard.
Broken screen cable or connector
The display cable connector is fragile and must be disconnected and reconnected carefully. Forcing it can break pins in the connector on the motherboard, turning a simple screen replacement into an expensive motherboard repair.
Damaged bezel clips and housing
Laptop bezels and screen housings are held together with small plastic clips that break easily if pried incorrectly. A broken bezel means the screen does not sit flush, and replacement bezels for specific models can be difficult to source.
Voided manufacturer warranty
Opening your laptop to replace the screen yourself will void any remaining manufacturer warranty. If you have accidental damage cover, the insurer may also reject claims if evidence of self-repair is found.
Incorrect reassembly
Laptops contain dozens of small screws, brackets, and ribbon cables. Missing a single screw or incorrectly routing a cable can cause rattling, overheating, or display issues. Our technicians follow manufacturer service manuals for every model.
