MacBook Keyboard Repair: What You Need to Know

MacBook keyboard repair divides cleanly into two generations with very different approaches. The butterfly keyboard era (2015 to 2019) is defined by Apple's controversial ultra-thin key mechanism — a 0.5mm travel design that proved extremely sensitive to microscopic dust particles. A single grain of debris under a butterfly key switch could cause the key to stop registering, register twice, or stick in the pressed position. Apple acknowledged the defect by launching a keyboard service programme and replacing the design entirely from 2019 onwards. However, that programme has now expired for all eligible models, leaving many butterfly keyboard MacBook owners without a warranty remedy. Our keyboard replacement service fills this gap at a significantly lower cost than Apple's current out-of-warranty fee.

The important technical distinction for butterfly keyboard MacBooks is that Apple designed the keyboard, battery, and trackpad as a single integrated top-case assembly. There is no practical way to replace just the keyboard mechanism on a butterfly MacBook — the entire assembly must be swapped. This means a butterfly keyboard repair automatically includes a new battery and trackpad, which is actually a benefit for older MacBooks where the battery may have deteriorated alongside the keyboard. We stock top-case assemblies for the most common butterfly models (MacBook Pro 2016-2019, MacBook Air 2018-2019, MacBook 12-inch 2015-2017) and can confirm availability before you send your device.

The Magic Keyboard generation (2019 MacBook Pro 16-inch onwards, and all M1/M2/M3/M4 models) returns to a scissor-switch mechanism with 1mm key travel — far more tolerant of real-world use. On Magic Keyboard MacBooks, the keyboard, battery, and trackpad are separate components, which means individual key mechanisms can often be replaced without a full top-case swap. A single damaged keycap or broken mechanism can sometimes be sourced individually, keeping repair costs proportionate to the actual damage. For models with widespread keyboard failure or liquid damage, a complete keyboard assembly replacement remains the most reliable long-term solution.
