PlayStation 5 HDMI Port Repair: A Case Study
HDMI port issues are one of the most common PlayStation 5 repairs we handle at RevivaTech. This case study documents a particularly challenging repair that showcases our expertise.
The Initial Diagnosis
Customer Complaint: PS5 shows no video output. Powers on (disc drive spins, beeps), but TV shows "No Signal."
Initial Assessment:
The customer had already tried:
- Different HDMI cables
- Different TVs
- Different HDMI ports on the TV
- Factory reset (via safe mode using audio prompts)
What We Found
Upon inspection, we discovered the HDMI port was physically damaged. Several pins inside the connector were bent, and one was completely broken off. This likely happened from:
- Tripping over an HDMI cable
- Attempting to plug in a cable at an angle
- Physical impact to the console
The Challenge
PS5 HDMI port repair is significantly more complex than PS4:
- Ball Grid Array (BGA) connection - The HDMI chip is soldered with tiny balls underneath, not visible pins
- Multilayer PCB - The PS5 motherboard has more layers than PS4
- Heat sensitivity - The AMD APU is nearby and sensitive to heat
- ESD vulnerability - More components that can be damaged by static
Our Repair Process
Step 1: Complete Disassembly
The PS5 requires careful disassembly to access the motherboard:
- Faceplate removal
- Stand and covers
- SSD heatsink
- Power supply disconnection
- 16 screws securing the motherboard
- Careful ribbon cable disconnection
Step 2: HDMI Port Removal
Using our JBC micro-soldering station:
- Applied quality flux to all joints
- Set hot air to 350°C with controlled airflow
- Used precision tweezers to lift the port once solder flowed
- Cleaned pads with solder wick and isopropyl alcohol
Step 3: Pad Inspection and Repair
We inspected all 19 pads under magnification. Three pads showed damage from the original failure:
- One lifted pad required micro-wire trace repair
- Two pads needed fresh solder application
- All other pads cleaned and tinned
Step 4: New Port Installation
We use only quality replacement HDMI ports with:
- Gold-plated contacts
- Proper pin alignment verified under microscope
- Solder paste application via stencil
- Controlled reflow at 250°C
Step 5: Testing and Quality Control
Before reassembly:
- Continuity test on all 19 pins
- Visual inspection under microscope
- Initial power-on test with display connected
- Full video output test (4K, HDR)
- 2-hour burn-in test
The Result
Repair time: 2.5 hours Parts cost: £15 (HDMI port) Total to customer: £85
The customer's alternative? Sony quoted £199 for an out-of-warranty repair with 2-3 week turnaround. We completed it in one day.
Prevention Tips
To avoid HDMI port damage on your PS5:
- Never force the cable - If it doesn't slide in easily, check the angle
- Use cable management - Route cables to prevent tripping
- Don't move the console with cable attached - Disconnect first
- Quality cables matter - Cheap cables can have oversized connectors
